How the NewTom 9000 Works

The Newtom System

NewTom9000 is a Computerized Tomograph dedicated to maxillofacial imaging (Dental Scan), working with "cone-beam" technology (CBCT = Cone Beam Computed Tomography). The system is composed by a scanner, a patient table and a workstation (PC) that controls the machine. Next is a brief explanation on how the machine and the software work.

Patient Positioning

The patient lies on the patient table and is centered with the aid of a laser positioning system. Besides the software provides two scout views that allow the user to perform finer adjustments of the patient.

Patient Scan

In 75 seconds the acquiring system executes a complete rotation around the patient’s head , taking all the necessary data (360 images) for a complete volumetric reconstruction. The acquired data are called Raw Data.

Reconstructed Volume

After the scan has been terminated, the user starts the Primary Reconstruction process. This process creates a volume or Study from the Raw Data. The size of the volume is based on a ROI (Region Of Interest) that defines the portion of the head to be analyzed. The ROI is set by the user. Multiple primary reconstructions can be performed on the same set of Raw Data allowing the user to change the inclination, the resolution and the size for each ROI.

Volume Slices

The volume created by the Primary Reconstruction is a stack of axial images. As shown on the picture each axial image corresponds to a different level inside the reconstructed volume.

Study Images

From the original status of the Study (only axial images) the user can create different types of images (Single Transaxial, Sequence of Transaxials, Panoramics, 3Ds). For each image different parameters are available allowing the user to adjust the images depending on his/her needs.

Study Tools

Many graphic tools are also available. Measurements of distances and angle can be traced on the images. Text, markers, comments, lines and arrows, each one with customizable color and size, can also be applied to the images, providing extra information.

Reports

When all the images have been created and improved with the help of the graphic tools, is possible to fill a customize report, easily importing the desired images from the study. The report can be printed on paper and film or saved as digital document.
